An introduction to the NGA HR Academy

Now in its 4th year, NGA HR Academy has opened its doors to some of the best graduate talent in the UK. The Academy is a talent acquisition initiative to onboard, train and develop graduates from a variety of educational disciplines.

The graduates get a chance to work in various departments in NGA HR over the course of the extensive 2 year program. Upon graduation, Academy members will move into the ResourceLink Consultancy Services (RCS) area of the business.

George Vaughan, RCS Leader with responsibility for this Academy has been with NGA HR 20 years, and started the program due to skills gaps in the current job market, especially in Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM)  areas. 'We recognised the need to build our talent pipeline from the ground up. Our talent pipeline at that point was more or less needed work in order to onboard the right calibre of candidates. Since starting the Academy, we have successfully progressed and promoted 10 employees through their development journey in the business. We call this ‘Grow Our Own…’

‘We’ve found that those employees who graduate from the Academy are fully versed in internal terminology, product knowledge and working methodologies much more quickly than staff we hire.’

Due to the success of the Academy, we will be following our graduates through their induction.

Here is Nyasha's story, the first in our series on the class of 2019:

Name: Nyasha Trish Dhliwayo

Course: Business and Human Resource Management

Year Graduated: 2016

What are your goals and motivations?

Right now my main goal is to get through this graduate program and learn as much as l can about ResourceLink and as time goes on hopefully progress as well but I’m just taking one step at a time.

What experience and training did you have?

This is my first official job related to the course I studied at university so I’m really intrigued to learn more and develop further skills as well as put the skills I obtained during my years of studying into practice.

What drew you to NGA HR?

The reason I was drawn to NGA was because of the values they stand for, I wanted to work for a company which would help me develop not only as an individual but as an employee as well. I believe that the guidance which I will receive whilst working for this company will help my employability skill and it will have a massive impact on my career progression.

How was the interview and onboarding process?

Before attending the interview I was very nervous and anxious but once I got there and saw how relaxed and friendly everyone was, I felt at ease and I remember leaving the interview feeling very grateful for the opportunity of meeting such influential people. I wasn’t confident that I would be selected but when I got the news I was very excited to be joining NGA.

How are you finding it at NGA HR?

So far so good. Everyone has been very helpful and they have taken their time to assist us with any help and questions that we have. It’s a friendly environment and I’m looking forward to meeting many more wonderful people and getting to know them.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with friends and family and l also love learning new recipes to cook. I have just moved to Peterborough so I’m looking forward to exploring the city and finding new places to visit.
