Whether it’s a common cold or a family issue, there are a multitude of reasons why employees may need time off work. Recurrent absences or lateness can, however, point towards bigger problems that companies must address. According to the CIPD, one third of organisations have recorded an increase in stress-related absence in the last year. There is also a growing awareness of mental health related problems in the workplace, in fact, the NHS reports that one in every three sick notes handed out to patients in the last year were for mental health problems.

In the same way that organisations have shifted their focus to the overall customer experience, HR teams must devote greater attention to the overall employee experience. Companies that are competing to attract and retain the best talent available are adapting to societal changes, brought about by advances in consumer technology.

According to a study from the World Economic Forum, millennials are seeking ‘a sense of purpose’ in the job they choose. This requirement ranks second only to salary. Millennials want to work environment that inspires and motivates them, and being a digital savvy generation, they can balk at the mundane realities of paperwork when what they really want to do is make a difference in the world.

Many organisations look to improve employee wellbeing by creating relaxed office spaces or by offering free food. Some of these workspace enhancements have proved popular, yet others have led to criticism – labelled as nothing more than superficial gestures.

Time and attendance tools are becoming vital to help organisations improve employee wellbeing, reduce costs and improve profitability.

Flexible working is fast becoming an expected benefit for many employees, rather than the ‘nice to have’ it once was.
